Grand Rapids Half Marathon

The Grand Rapids Marathon supports every runner, celebrates every individual accomplishment and embodies the spirit of friendship and community that is so unique to running. 

This year we're excited to support and celebrate all our runners by offering a training team that's free with your registration. Join teammates from around the country to train for 13.1 miles at the Grand Rapids Half Marathon on October 16th. 

The team kicks off on July 25th, get your spot now and start training with us!

The Grand Rapids Half Marathon team includes:

  • A 12 week half marathon training program of 5-6 workouts per week, including easy runs, speed work, long runs, and cross training. All running workouts can be modified for walk/run intervals.

  • Weekly emails from your coach about what you'll be doing and why.

  • Team kickoff and pre-race calls with Coach Shane, as well as monthly workshops on everything from hydration to mental prep for race day.

  • Group chat with your coach and teammates for high fives, training questions, and bonus motivation.

  • The option to work with Coach Shane one on one for personalized training, weekly advice, and 24/7 support via text.

  • The Bird app to follow the training plan, track your progress, and communicate with your coach and team.

Who should join:

Beginner and intermediate runners looking to increase endurance, speed and confidence for race day. This plan is appropriate for runners training for their first half marathon, or looking to improve their time. All workouts are effort-based and can be modified for run/walk intervals. If you're looking for a more advanced plan, email us at hello@bird.coach!

Please note, this plan starts with a long run of 5 miles in week one. You should be comfortable running or run/walking four days a week and up to 5 miles (even if it's slow!) at the beginning of the plan.

The regular text check-ins and weekly virtual happy hours were the accountability that I was looking for and demonstrated that the coaches really cared about helping you get to where you wanted to be in the program.
Years ago, I used to participate (run/walk) in 5ks to half marathons, but it’s been at least 5 years since my last one. I joined the Bird Running Group to help motivate me and to have some accountability to get moving again. The January run club was the perfect fit! All the coaches were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful! The guidance and weekly run plans were clear and provided you with specific instructions for beginners, intermediates, and experts. I was impressed and excited at how far I’d come from the beginning to the end of the program!
